English Overview The general outcomes for students in the English Language Arts program are listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and representing.
Students will explore these different strands through a variety of different activities and topics such as poetry, journaling, reading responses, writer’s workshop, and several more. The students will read minimum two novels throughout the year as well as a variety of non-fiction material. The focus will be on developing students’ abilities as readers, writers, and public speakers.
In doing so, students will:
Be able to express their ideas by using their personal experiences all the while considering the ideas of others
Strengthen and apply their previous knowledge in literacy by using a variety of reading comprehension strategies
Be encouraged to read and write regularly
Practice critical thinking skills
Create and enhance their own texts through editing and revising processes in order to become more proficient writers
Be encouraged to celebrate their own success as well as the successes of others
Grade eight students will pass a divisional English exam at the end of the year.
